Work And Learning
Information on work and learning is nowadays quite easy to come by and employers play a big part in making the process work.
The concept of work and learning is all about gaining new skills whilst doing your job. This not only benefits you, but also your employer, as they continually acquire retrained personnel without the expense of recruiting and working-up new staff.
There are over one million courses from which to choose and with the financial help of your employer, or the government, you’d be crazy not to take advantage of it all.
Bear in mind that research has shown that there will be fewer and fewer unskilled jobs available over the coming years. As the job market continues to develop and technology brings even greater change to the workplace, skills will be greatly in demand. So not enhancing your personal set of skills could leave you behind.
And if your employer needs a nudge in the right direction (to understand the full benefit of work and learning), then there are a large number of courses and schemes for you to consult and seek advice.
And for many, the best start is to begin with the basics, with English, maths and IT. Few of us would not benefit from extra time in these three basics, and this is where work and learning comes to the fore.
So, why not take the plunge and go and talk to your boss, or his/her boss if need be. You could also ask your union representative, as often unions are up-to-speed with work and learning initiatives. You might also find your employer runs a mentoring scheme, whereby you can spend time with someone experienced in a particular field, or life situation; if they do, volunteer for it.
There are a number of main schemes out there, including Train to Gain, learndirect and Investors in People. Train to Gain helps young people and adults get the quality career training in the workplace, by providing advice, helping discuss the most relevant skills and also looking at funding.
Learndirect allows employees to study, whilst at work, for a University course, including an undergraduate, or postgraduate qualification, or a course module. And if your employer is a member of the Investors in People Scheme, they have undertaken to pursue staff development through training and career counselling.
So, there’s no excuse: ask your employer now.
