With the economy in a slump and the job market a shambles many people are contemplating a career change. If you have recently lost your job or you just desire a change of pace, there are a few things you should know before you change careers. Being prepared to change careers will make the transition easier.

Before you can successfully change career you need to figure out what your new career will be. First, evaluate your interests, skills, and values to see if a new career path reveals itself in any of these aspects. Next, consider your successful roles in life. For example, is there a particular part of your current job you excel at or a volunteer role in which you shine? Identifying the things you are good at, and enjoy may help make your new career path crystal clear.

Once you have identified your new career path you need to do your homework before you can change careers. Read up on the career path you have chosen. Talk to professionals you know who already work within that career path.

Additionally, if you know someone who currently works in your desired career path ask if you can observe them in their job.

Once you know what career path you want to follow, and you know what it takes to work in that career path you are almost ready to change careers. Now all you need to do is make sure you are qualified to work within that career field.

Changing careers may involve you going back to school, or taking a pay cut to gain experience. That is why so many people avoid making big career changes. Finding a new career that utilizes some of your existing experience may help you avoid this step.

One of the best ways to change careers without turning your life upside down is to simply shift gears career wise. In other words, just look for new opportunities within your current career field. It is far easier to transition from one position in a career field to another because of your experience within that particular industry.
